A1 Motorway, Germany

John Laing Group was a joint major shareholder in the A1 Mobil consortium which achieved financial close on the A1 motorway PPP project in July 2008. The project to design, build, finance and operate a section of the motorway consisted of the widening of 72 kilometres of existing motorway between Hamburg and Bremen in Northern Germany as well as a 30 year operating concession. At the time, it was the largest PPP project awarded in Germany with total capex of approximately €417 million.
John Laing worked closely with its partners, ensuring the availability of the highway during construction while also modernising and expanding the traffic lanes and highway junctions. Construction completed in 2012 and John Laing divested its 42.5% stake in A1 Mobil in 2019.
